Flash Security Override

A new set of security controls were added to Macromedia Flash with the introduction of Release 8. This included a more restrictive method of controlling file access on the local disk drive. When you select Play from the Manage Web Archives in Gov Webcaster, or open the index.html file in the recording directory generated by Gov Webcaster, the browser will show the playback screen, but the status message "Loading File ....(0%)" remains on the screen, failing to complete loading of the recording. This is caused the the Flash security preventing the access to the recording on the local drive.

To fix this problem, you must configure the Flash player browser plugin to allow local access to the web archive directory using the following steps while the computer is connected to the Internet:

  1. Locate the directory where the web archive files are stored for SoniClear Gov Webcaster. This directory is indicated in the Edit/Preferences/Files preference settings in SoniClear Gov Webcaster.
  2. Open the web archive home browser file by double clicking on the index.html file in that directory. This should display a page with an Open button, but no recordings listed. If recordings are shown in this page, but you still cannot play the recordings when you select one, contact Trio Systems for additional technical support assistance.
  3. Left click in the middle of the blank area of the webcast selection list. Then right click in the same location. You should see a popup menu that says "Settings" as the first option, and "About Adobe Flash Player 9" (or player 8 if you have an earlier plugin version) as the second option. Select Settings from this popup menu. This will display the Flash plugin settings dialog.
  4. Click the Advanced button in the Setting dialog. This will launch a second browser display and connect to the Adobe Flash support website, which will say "Flash Player Help". The computer must be connected to the Internet for this and following steps to work correctly.
  5. Select the option "Global Security Settings Panel". On the right side of the browser page you will see the settings for your plugin displayed in the window labeled "Adobe Flash Player Settings Manager" in the tab labeled "Global Security Settings".
  6. Click the Edit locations... combo box and select Add Location.
  7. In the popup dialog, select "Browse for folder ...".
  8. In the popup file selection dialog, select the folder where your web archive files are stored. This is the directory specified in the SoniClear preferences where you started this process. You will then see that directory shown in the section labeled "Always trust files in these locations:".
  9. Close the browser window.
  10. Verify that the security settings are correct by opening the index.html file in the web archive base directory. You should now see the list of recordings that are stored in the archive. In addition, you should also be able to listen to the recordings in the archive using the Play button in the File/Manage Web Archives dialog in SoniClear.

You will have to repeat the above procedure for every computer that needs access to the web archive files from a local network drive. For that reason, it is not practical to use a browser-based playback of files from a network drive. In Release 6.0, there will be a separate Flash program for playback from a browser connected over a LAN, using the Manage Lan Archives feature.

Contact Trio Systems for additional support if this description does not resolve the Flash playback problem.
